I write these lists in the hope that people will implement what they learn and produce better essays, better resumes, and overall better written materials.   Improved writing gets results when it comes to obtaining jobs, getting into school, landing new clients and keeping the customers youve got.   So read up! 10.   Advice vs. Advise Here’s a note from one of my loyal readers, Christine, who requested that I mention this common mix-up: “Advice is a noun. An example would be: ‘Brenda provided very useful advice regarding spelling errors.’ Advise is a verb. An example would be: ‘Brenda can you please advise your readers about similarly misused words?’” Thank you Christine for your contribution to my yearly list! 9.   Your vs. You’re You’re is a contraction for “you are.”   If you’re using the word to mean “you are” (2 words), write it as a contraction.   E.g., Do you know that you’re about to miss the 5:00 train? Your is a possessive pronoun.   E.g., Your train is leaving in 2 minutes. 8.   Tenet vs. Tenant Even our president messed this one up.   A tenet is a belief or ideal of faith.   Tenants rent from landlords.   See The President Makes Grammatical Errors Too. 7.   Sign up vs. sign-up I see this one on the web all the time and it drives me a bit batty.   Sign up is a verb.   Sign-up is an adjective that modifies a noun like form or sheet.   Correct:   “Sign up here for news and updates” or Go to our sign-up page to register.   Incorrect: “Sign-up here for news and updates” or Go to our sign up page to register.   For similar examples of proper (and improper) use of phrasal verbs, read my article, Check out this Phrasal Verb Breakdown. 6.   Everyday vs. Every day I wrote a whole article about this one too: Common Grammatical Errors:   Everyday vs. Every Day.   Everyday is an adjective meaning “common” or “day-to-day.”  As I’m sure you know, people make everyday grammatical errors every day. 5. “This” without a referent Make sure that if you use the word This to start a sentence, you help your reader understand what you’re referring to!   The best practice is to use a referent after the word This.   Incorrect:   This will ensure your sentences are understood.   Correct:   This practice will ensure your sentences are understood. 4.   Verbage Verbage does NOT mean “words”!   Although the OED does have an entry for “verbage” as a “rare alternate spelling of verbiage,” Merriam-Webster does not even acknowledge the existence of the word. Verbiage, often misused as well, means excess language. The jury is out as to whether the phrase “excess verbiage” is redundantâ€"but I’m sticking to it. 3.  Apostrophes (that’s not apostrophe’s!) to make plural nouns With some exceptions which I won’t go into here, plural nouns are formed by adding an s or es to the singular form of the nounâ€"NOT by adding an apostrophe!   The plural of parent is parents; the plural of computer is computers; and the plural of Wednesday is Wednesdays.   No apostrophe needed!   Conversely, possessives ARE formed by adding an apostrophe s.   To speak about an author’s intent, for instance, use the apostrophe s. 2.   Myself Think for a few seconds before you use the word myself in place of me at the end of a sentence.   A sentence like “George was speaking to my friend Lucy and myself” is grammatically incorrect.   Replacing me with myself has become common, perhaps as an attempt to avoid using the word me.   Think about it.   You would say “George was speaking to me” so just say “George was speaking to my friend Lucy and me” NOT   George was speaking to my friend Lucy and myself.   The parts of speech don’t change just because another person was added to the sentence! 1. Comma splice I can’t tell you how often my clients string two full, complete sentences together with a comma.   This error is called a comma splice.   (See Writing Tips:   How to Use Commas and Semicolons Part 2.)  Here’s an example:   “Simply observing my surroundings was not enough for me, I needed to know how things worked and why they worked in that specific way.” The correct way to punctuate this sentence is “Simply observing my surroundings was not enough for me; I needed to know how things worked and why they worked in that specific way.” Two full sentences should most often get separated by a period or a semicolon; do NOT use a comma! In 2005 I started working for a school system and right from the start I could see that there was some unprofessionalism in some of the employees there. To me unprofessional means not acting as if you were at you place of business or acting as though you are at home or out with your friends. What she was doing was having a life outside of work which I thought we were all as citizens entitled to do. When I think of the word immoral in the context of the teaching profession I think of teachers like the ones I worked with walking around the school building talking badly about the elementary and middle school students they were teaching during school hours. I do think that Mr. or Mrs.  Petit acted immorally in the eyes of the society around them even though they were just living their own lives for which this country was founded, but not to the extent that any harm should have come to them. Was she teaching the children right from wrong? Well yes and no, she taught the children with this mishap that it was right to follow your feelings and to be a leader in society not a follower not to go with the norm, but she also showed that she had no disregard for the laws of the state she lived in by breaking the law for sexual misconduct. I can not even count on my fingers how many teachers I would deem unfit to teach and Mrs. Petit is not one of them. To me being unfit to teach is a person that thinks that yelling at children is a good thing, or a teacher that is willing to put their hands on someone’s child to discipline them, or most of the so called teachers now who believe that teaching the children to past a test is preparing them for life. What Mrs. Petit did can not be deemed as a person who is unfit to teach, she was proven to be an outstanding teacher and never harmed a student, they were very well educated and that is because of her. In this case the board was justified due to the fact that she was arrested for breaking the law which would cause a problem for the community whom would of course be outraged by this. I personally believe that they had no just cause in terminating her employment because there was no harm to the children and she had learned her lesson which she could have used as a basis to discourage not only her students but persons in general from doing things that are illegal. I do not think that what one does in there personal lives as long as it does not in any way transfer into their professional lives should not be the basis for being deemed unfit for their profession or unprofessional in anyway. For example if Mr.  Carter was a teacher and he never did anything to harm his students or co-workers and he went to a club on a Friday night, while at this club he saw a beautiful woman but did not see her face and he walked up behind her and said something like hey beautiful you are looking fine in that dress, the woman turned around at it was a co-worker of his she gets him fired because he made a pass at her while not at work how is this right? What is this teaching the children? It tells them never to try to get a date because it could cost you your job. As the author have worked as a consultant of a team of engineers to supervise the whole project, have faced many risks. The author has also worked as a project manager or project consultant within administrative building of the construction project. Background of the case: After finishing the training I started working as a project consultant with a team of engineers to supervise a big project that cost around one billion SAR. This project has contained concrete and steel structure, steel structures, and asphalt roads with lights, STP, petrol station, power station, ground and tower water tank, communication building, and controlling towers. I have gathered a good experience while working on this project. Moreover, delay impacted negatively on cash flow schedule of payments for contractor. As a result of delay the suppliers were not paid on time which affected the flow of some material according to project' schedule (Jackson, 2013). Further, it led to delay in clearing labours salaries more than three months which reflected on the project growth. In order to solve such issue, the contractor decided to borrow loan from the bank for funding the project. As a result, it helped in avoiding risk and managing flow of payment. However, this solution succeeded to face the delay of payments but the contractor accepted the risk from loan which affected on project' profit as bank took 10% on the project cost. Approval of Labour Permit: There was delay in getting approval of labour permts due to constraints of policy in passing to project' location. Such situation arisen as it was mandatory to get authorized permit before using equipment, materials and labour. As an outcome it took nearly 3 weeks to get permission. The time frame was large as the security department was located 80km away from the site of the project. Therefore, travelling 80km for fulfilling the requirements delayed in gaining permission. In addition, the contract states that all labourers of the particular site must follow the sub-contractor. It was often observed by the projector manager that the labourers spend times with other workers that led to delay the work (Cronja, Reyneke, Van Wyk, 2013). This can cause risk to the contractor as the work can get stopped until the labours are not permitted to join the site. Therefore, the contractor accepted and adapted with this situation but he took this point when he was makin g up date for project' schedule. Accident: The other problem met by contractor is when labours bus made accident in its way coming back to the accommodation location. As a result of 24 labours died and 9 labours injured also the electrical engineer is died in this accident that affected on manpower in project which was around 200 labours. The death of labours reflected on in the project performance, especially, the productivity in the site decreased approximately by 35%. The reason behind the accident was the tiredness of the driver as he was allocated number of tasks to perform each day in supplying materials from one place to other and carrying labours to other locations which affected on his concentration to drive (Gaudenzi Borghesi, 2012). Further in order, to tackle such kind of risk the project manager decided to contract with subcontractor to complete some critical work in project. However, the manager faced a fear of increase the price of subcontractor as they refuse to work with normal price because the pr oject' location was in remote area. Thus, the project manager agreed on paying asked price in order to mitigate risk and safeguard labours. On the other hand, some employees were changed with other project in order to avoid risk. Therefore, it can ascertained that increase in subcontractor' price and treatment of injured labours and compensation to victims' families led to the increase in additional cost. Limited appointment of task: The other risk bear by contractor is due a rule related to limit appointment of sub-contractors as per the contract which mentioned that a contractor cannot allot work more than 30% of the total project to sub-contractors.
